It is true that we all have visited San Miguel de Allende at least once. This colonial city located in the state of Guanajuato always delivers a bohemian vibe and normally surprises us with its gastronomic offer… We also can enjoy one of its many food festivals, all of it makes us feel young and happy …
Now, San Miguel shows a new boom of small establishments openings, obviously marked by the hard passion, good taste and dedication of their owners.
So, I decided to leave the typical routine and discover some of these incredible places that only can be found in good old San Miguel de Allende. Let’s check them out…
Cafeteria “La Mancha”
We start our adventure in San Miguel de Allende, visiting one of the most prestigious cafeterias in the whole region…of course, for a dose of caffeine into our bloodstream.
I highly recommend the Café “La Mancha”, a space that smells like art with roasted coffee. Its bar is served by the barista Miguel Tovar, who handles a whole bunch of styles and artifacts for the preparation of this grain that clarifies the mind and stimulates the body.
I always drink my American coffee while I read some of the publications they have. It´s the perfect place to spend a pleasant morning.
If you’re lucky enough, you can start a conversation with Christian Zaid or Paloma Montes, the owners of the place, who will provide you with a moment of camaraderie that always makes that cup of coffee taste better.

“Mercado Sano” (Healthy market)
Undoubtedly, the organic food epicenter of this Heritage City is its Market. The group is conformed it by farmers, beauty craftsmen and dressmakers, restaurants owners, baristas and “jugueros”(juice makers). All with the common denominator of promoting the organic culture. This attractive organic labyrinth is there for the enjoyment of locals and visitors alike.
Stop at each stand and ask the manager any questions you may have about the multiple benefits that these organic products bring. It is also the perfect place to erase the idea that everything organic is expensive. I myself do not presume as a potential “big spender”, and I was please to found that most of these products are within reach of any budget.
Be sure to visit the fruit and vegetable area, the green Living Grass bar, and the Dilshan Madawala clothing shop and Sri Lankan food on the second floor. And listen to a recognized Frenchman play the piano and endulge the afternoon with his melodies.
- Location: Ancha de San Antonio Street, 123
“Marsala Cocina con Acentos”
This chic restaurant puts an accent on details. Its decoration exceeds the good taste in its handling of colors, opening the imaginative appetite of the diner. In its central patio is recommended to look for a table under the shade and lower the temperature with a beer or a “Mimosa”.
You will experience the hospitality of the waiters and manager Ximena de León, who at all times are concerned to make the experience of Marsala one-of-a-kind.
Another great accent is their own mezcal brand “Doña Natalia”, distilled in the northern state of Durango.
Don’t miss the quinoa or tuna tickets… they’re a must!
The escargot are a taste of heaven, and so the lamb ribs in crust of chicharrón, and without doubt the best thing will be to accompany your food and drinks with that casual good vibe that feels every corner of San Miguel de Allende.
