It records more than 80 exhalations and an earthquake in less than 24 hours

The Popocatépetl volcano slightly increased its activity in 24 hours by registering more than 80 exhalations and more than an hour of tremor, including an earthquake, reported the National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred) in its report today, February 4, 2025.

According to the most recent monitoring, Popocatépetl presented 84 exhalations accompanied by water vapor and volcanic gases. In addition, 85 minutes of very low-amplitude tremor were recorded.

Cenapred also detected a volcano-tectonic earthquake, which was recorded today at 09:43 hours, and was of magnitude 1.3.

Popocatépetl, in the Yellow Phase 2 traffic light

Due to the current activity of the Popocatépetl volcano, the volcanic alert traffic light is currently in Yellow Phase 2, which contemplates various scenarios, including:

Some explosions of Popocatépetl of minor to moderate size.
Occurrence of tremor of variable amplitude.
Fall of ash of light to moderate in nearby towns and some more distant cities.
Expulsion of incandescent fragments within the exclusion radius of 12 kilometers.
Occurrence of lahars due to the accumulation of ash on the slopes and its interaction with the rains expected in the coming weeks.
Possibility of pyroclastic flows that do not reach towns.

The Popocatépetl volcano is monitored from various sides and several cameras pointing towards it so that it can be observed 365 days a year and that Cenapred experts can analyze the activity it presents and determine the measures to follow in case it increases.
